ONTARIO LABOUR RELATIONS BOARD UNDERVALUES PART-TIME STUDENT WORKERS

TORONTO, ON, June 16, 2016 – College Student Alliance (CSA) is dissatisfied with the Ontario Labour Relations Board’s (OLRB) decision to generate unfair barriers for 70 per cent of part-time student workers by allowing the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) to hold a representation vote in June 2016.

STUDENTS WIN BIG IN 2016 FEDERAL BUDGET

Changes to the Canadian Student Grant Program and the Canadian Student Loan Program will ensure PSE is more accessible for middle- and low-income students.

CSA IS SUPPORTIVE OF THE NEW ONTARIO STUDENT GRANT

Ontario College Students Applaud Modernization of OSAP in 2015 Budget

April 23rd, 2015

 

TORONTO, ON April 23, 2015 – College students are pleased the Ontario government’s 2015 budget includes the adoption of a key recommendation from the College Student Alliance (CSA) on student support. The government will be removing the student-owned vehicle asset exemption from OSAP’s needs assessment process. This means a student won’t face cuts in OSAP funding if the student owns a vehicle, as was previously the case. The recommendation to remove this exemption was in CSA’s 2015 pre-budget submission, “Strengthening Ontario’s College System for Students.”

Ontario College Students Respond To Premier Wynne’s Action Plan To Stop Sexual Violence And Harassment

TORONTO, ON March 6th, 2015 – This morning Premier Wynne announced the government of Ontario’s Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment. This Action Plan follows recent media attention revealing that just nine of 78 public universities across Canada and no public colleges in Ontario had adopted special policies to deal with sexual assault.

Ontario College Students Receive News of Faculty Tentative Agreement

Ontario college students benefit from oncat initiative

January 21st, 2014

TORONTO, ON January 16th, 2014 – This morning the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Brad Duguid, announced the launch of a new course-to-course database created by the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT) that will be hosted on ONTransfer.ca. This online database will provide students with the information they need to make informed decisions about their education and make it easier for post-secondary students to see how their credits are recognized at other institutions. The College Student Alliance (CSA) is pleased to see this database launched this year as transferability has been one of the pillars of the organization since its inception.

Ontario college students support announcement of $42m towards creation of ontario online

TORONTO, ON January 13th, 2014 – This afternoon the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Brad Duguid, announced $42M of new funding over three years towards the formation of Ontario Online, an initiative aimed at expanding online learning in Ontario. The College Student Alliance (CSA) is pleased that Ontario Online will be offering participating students and instructors academic and technical supports, as well as best-practices and research in a central, online location.

TORONTO, ON May 2nd, 2013 – Today, the Ministry of Finance released the 2013 Budget for the Government of Ontario. The release of the 2013 Ontario Budget provided few surprises to Ontario’s college students. The 2013 Ontario Budget includes a commitment to introducing a fairer approach to tuition deferral fees, a review of the recently announced post-secondary tuition framework, and funding for a Youth Jobs Strategy to address youth unemployment.

Ontario college students comment on the new multi-year tuition framework

March 28th, 2013

TORONTO, ON March 28th, 2013 – Today, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, released the government of Ontario’s plan for the 2013-2017 Tuition Framework. The framework that has been in place since 2006 allows for an annual 5% overall tuition fee increases at Ontario colleges and universities. In contrast, this new framework will allow college tuition to increase at an overall rate of 3% per year with professional and high demand programs increasing no more than 5% per year.

Ontario College Students Want A Resolution

August 27th, 2012

TORONTO, ON August 27th, 2012 – With the College Faculty Collective Agreement expiring on August 31st and the strike vote set for September 10th, college and college-university students across Ontario are anxiously hoping for a resolution of contract negotiations. The College Student Alliance (CSA) is calling on both the Council and the Ontario Public Service Empolyees Union (OPSEU) to be fair and reasonable in the negotiations of the new contract. September is an important time for new students beginning their college education and also for those returning to their studies, who experienced the September 2011 support staff labour disruption.
